Tomorrow, a Series of Moments

Tomorrow is the first day of school.

For me, this means relatively little. I left that world years ago.

For my friends who have stayed in the classroom, tomorrow takes on greater significance.

For them, it is a moment of dread and anticipation: the true end of summer.

They know that tomorrow is the moment when they must once more step in front of the room and face the children.

It is the moment when the great struggle--or perhaps not so great?---begins over who really controls the educational experience.

It is the moment when standards are set and precedents established.

It is the moment where administrators demonstrate whether they are consistent in their policies regarding dress and behavior.

It is the moment when school supplies are most readily available, but no one expects that to last.

It is the moment when those weeks of professional development sessions prove their worth, or lack thereof.

It is the moment when the students form connections with their classmates and, in the process, try to establish their place in the world.

It is the moment when teacher and student alike realize how much they know and how much remains to be learned.

It is the moment where everyone takes a deep breath and realizes that this is only the first of many such moments that make up a school year.

Every one of them, a moment of truth.

Good luck to those who keep fighting the good fight.
