Wake Me Up When September Ends

Hello again, Invisible Audience!

Your favorite itinerant blogger has not vanished from the face of the Earth...at least not yet. Since my last post, way back on Bastille Day, the days have simply been too packed with excitement to slow down and hammer out a blog post. This past month in particular has been particularly hectic as I finished up on postdoctoral fellowship, started another in the same place, and then started looking for jobs.

Indeed, the academic job market looms large on my thoughts this year, especially since deadlines are coming up soon. My first application is due in tomorrow, and I'm hoping to get three others finished before the end of this week. (I'll explain why momentarily.) This year, I am broadening my search to include not merely history of science jobs but also American history and public history postings. Right now, that means I have about a dozen applications to work on before the end of the fall.

But that's not all! I've also committed a great deal of time over the past two weeks to a pair of long-term projects. The first is an article which, if all goes according to plan, will be published by the end of October. The second is a museum exhibit devoted to the history of electronics, which would be a lot less time-consuming if I were not responsible for writing all of the label text.

And if jobs and academically inspired extracurriculars weren't enough, I'm heading off to Europe on Wednesday for a pair of conferences. Think of it as an echo my 2009 grand tour to Brittany, London, and Berlin. In this case, I'll be heading north to beautiful Copenhagen before flying even farther north to Edinburgh. Nine days, two countries, two conference papers. I am extremely excited, but it has been an impossibly busy time at work trying to make sure my itinerary is all set and that my conference talks are set. (By the way, if anyone knows of exciting things I should see or do in either of those fair cities, please let me know in the comments!)

That's really about it. Except, of course, for the pub quiz, visits with family and friends, and an audition for a nationally syndicated trivia-based game show (What was it's name again?).

All of which is a roundabout way of saying that I haven't forgotten you, oh loyal readers, but it's been a hectic time these past few weeks, and it doesn't look like it's going to be settling down anytime soon. Still, I haven't given up on this old blog yet. After all, the holidays are nearly here. I'd best get started working on this year's movie quote quiz.

Well, maybe after things have quieted down a bit...
