Summer Agenda: 2012

For those of you chomping at the bit to know about my summer itinerary:

July 1-7:  Two days at work, Independence Day (starting with a potential cookout and culminating in a definite pub quiz), and then a wedding! Yes, that's right. Another one of my high school friends has found that special someone and I've been invited to attend the festivities. It should be a lot of fun, assuming that this triple-digit heat wave subsides before the weekend.

July 8-14: Originally, I had planned to return to business as usual following the wedding excitement, and I should still be able to do that for at least a day or two before the circus comes to town. By circus, of course, I'm referring to a massive academic conference being co-organized by my current employer. Considering that every major, and many minor, historians of science, technology, and medicine will be in attendance--including several personal friends--I feel as though I should make a point of being there. No plans yet for Bastille Day, though I have a few potential ideas.

The rest of July: Seriously need to buckle down and finalize the case study I've been assigned in connection with my fellowship. In addition, I'll be writing the text for a new museum exhibit, conducting preliminary research for a book chapter on the history of electronic music, and compiling a new syllabus for job applications in the fall. Will there be pub quiz? Certainly. And possibly intramural softball, despite my recent graduation.

Early August: Pretty much the same as early July, but with added stress because if everything listed above doesn't get finished then I will feel super guilty spending time with friends during our annual summer retreat.

Late August: Assuming that I will attend the aforementioned retreat, then upon my return I will have to begin plans for the next stage in my crazy career. Fortunately, in this case, that will involve staying in the exact same place. Yes, one of my backup plans finally came through, so I will be remaining at the same institution for the 2012-2013 academic year. Granted, I will technically be a "fellow" instead of an "employee," and will have to move to a new office (or possibly my old office) on the third floor...but otherwise, my life will be much the same. New challenges--book proposals, job applications, and conference presentations--loom on the horizon, but at least I will working someplace I enjoy.

That's all for now. Stay cool, ladies and gentlemen. I'll see you in July.
