And like that, he's gone.

In approximately 12 hours, I'll be leaving Old Ivy for the last time. Of course, I'll be coming back over the next few months. My apartment's lease doesn't expire until the end of September, so I have time to clean the place over the next few weeks. Also I have a dissertation to defend and a pub quiz to run until I can no longer claim graduate student status. But for all intents and purposes, tomorrow marks the beginning of the end for my tenure as a graduate student. Over the next two weeks, I'll be submitting my thesis to my committee, starting my postdoctoral fellowship, and exploring employment possibilities for the following academic year.

Oh yes, and I'll be moving. Let's not forget that. Indeed, the "itinerant" part of my blog's subtitle seems more fitting than ever now that I'm on the threshold of entering the job market. Unless I somehow get a tenure-track job, or more importantly, tenure, I fear I'll be moving around a bit for the next few years. This is unfortunate, as recent experiences have reminded me how much I hate the processes of packing and unpacking, both of which serve as reminders of the sheer amount of stuff one accumulates over the course of several years. But until the full-scale digitization of libraries and archives, I am bound to lug my books and papers (all 20+ boxes of them), as well as all my other assorted possessions and random collections (boomerangs, CED players, etc.) from place to place, following the promise of a steady position as a professor...or curator...or whatever one does with a degree in the history of science.

In any case, dear reader, I will keep you posted of any relevant developments. At least until I get that tenure track job and have to figure out what the future holds for my online presence.

For now, expect blogging to continue at its present irregular pace, especially for the month of September. There's just so much to be done...
